Workshops

I am experienced in running Art Therapy workshops with young people and children with challenging behaviours, learning disabilities, adults with mental health and those on the Autistic Spectrum.

Workshops can be from a few hours to over a number of days.

Workshops can be tailored to:

  • Introduce Art Therapy as a medium to explore feelings in a supported environment
  • Focus on a specific area or theme for the group
  • Be useful for training days in corporate companies

Please see below for an example of a workshop for young people whom were described as ‘hard to reach’.

2 Day workshop for Adolescents: 9am – 4pm

Adolescents are often painfully aware of themselves and frequently lack confidence, despite bravado . Art Therapy provides the YP with an opportunity to try out ideas and opinions to encourage them to explore and express their feelings within a safe non- judgemental space. The Workshop focuses on themes in order to catch the YP’s interest and help them to explore an alternative form of release.

Day One

Warm-up

This warm up is a gentle introduction into the group. As well as being an ‘Ice breaker’ it is a way in which the YP can begin to look at aspects of themselves and begin to share these with others. The warm up encourages the group to look at issues around trust, safety and the network of support that is available to them.

Hands

Each YP receives 2 hand templates , which they design a pattern/ picture on and on the other side they write 2 sentences about themselves anonymously.

(1) something everybody knows about me

(2) something nobody knows about me

At the end of the day The Hands are shared out and each person reads 2 of the Hands and places them on to a large piece of paper as the group wishes ( pattern side up). Revisiting this piece ties up the days events and opens up a discussion of how the YP experienced the sessions , what would they liked to have changed, enjoyed etc Discussion; trust, support, nurture, team/peer build.

My Island

To begin this session the group choose a partner to take turns to draw round each other. A short story/ meditation is shared (shipwreck where an island is discovered) and then the group uses they’re ‘body template’ to work on their own island .

Areas that may be explored;

  • Name of Island
  • Areas of Island relating to body parts
  • Do you attempt to join other islands
  • Do you have defence
  • People / animals / food / means of transport if any / weather

Discussion; Issues of adventure, loss, fear, family?support system

Box of me

Each YP receives a box . On the outside they design what they portray ( their persona) and on the inside they create a number of small pieces of what describes them ( inner turmoil, character, feelings, fears , desires, secrets) YP is give the opportunity to share all or part of box at the end if they want … Boxes taken away following 2 day workshop or left/ destroyed.
